RYAN Finnerty is playing a cool poker hand as he evaluates the player market ahead of completing Sheffield Steelers’ roster for next season.
The Canadian coach has already signed up some top imports and British players but his dealings have slackened off recently.
“It’s been pretty slow, we are talking to a lot guys right now but money is high still” he said, referring to wage demands. “Players are being patient as mainland Europe fills up the price comes down, all you can hope is that the guy you are after is still available.
“We have three spots to fill (two forwards, one d-man) and patience will be the key for us.
“The UK is gaining a lot more respect and agents seem to be pushing guys towards us a lot more these days. The uncertainty with the Euro exchange rate is putting guys off a bit.
“We have to find the right guys at the right price.”
Finnerty said the league’s decision to allow an eleventh import was “a surprise to us.”
“We had loaded up our Brit pack so now the pressure is on those guys to step up and play a bigger role.”
