Sheffield Steelers frustrated as early Cardiff Devils goal proves enough
Sheffield Steelers lost to Cardiff Devils in Wales on Saturday evening
Sheffield Steelers were left frustrated in South Wales after falling to a 1-0 Challenge Cup defeat against Cardiff Devils despite controlling much of the contest.

The only goal arrived just 43 seconds into the game, with Kristoff Kontos putting Cardiff ahead before Sheffield had properly settled.
It proved enough.

After a slow opening ten minutes, Aaron Fox’s side took control for long spells and created more than enough opportunities to get back into the game, but Cardiff goaltender Christian Stoever produced an outstanding performance to preserve the shutout.
Sheffield finished the night with a 32-26 advantage in shots, including a dominant 13-4 edge in the third period, but simply could not find a way through.
Stoever stopped all 32 Steelers attempts and was the clear difference between the sides.
The visitors also had to overcome two Cardiff power plays during the evening.

Macoy Erkamps was called for delay of game at 3:24, but the Steelers penalty kill stood firm, while Adam Rockwood later took a tripping minor deep into the final period.
Again Sheffield survived, giving themselves one last opportunity to force overtime.
Matt Greenfield was withdrawn for the extra attacker in the closing stages, but Stoever and the Cardiff defence held firm.
The defeat leaves Sheffield’s Challenge Cup position unresolved with one group game still remaining.
The Steelers are back at the Utilita Arena on Sunday afternoon for Elite League action against Fife Flyers before returning to Cup competition on Wednesday night when Manchester Storm visit Sheffield.
That final group game could yet prove decisive in determining whether the Steelers progress directly to the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
For Sheffield, however, Saturday’s defeat will feel like an opportunity missed.
After conceding inside the opening minute they recovered well, controlled large parts of the contest and generated enough chances to win the game.
But on this occasion, Stoever simply refused to be beaten.
