Sheffield Steelers are Play Off champions 2014!
They beat the favourites, Belfast Giants in overtime at Nottingham’s NIC Arena, in the Play Off final, this evening. Defenceman Drew Fata crashed home the winner, 76 seconds into overtime.
Giants slightly shaded the early play but couldn’t profit from a couple of neutral zone turnovers by the South Yorkshire side.
Rob Dowd and Stefan Meyer came close but Sheffield goalie Frank Doyle made a remarkable save across his goal-line to keep the scores level.
The second session burst into life when Belfast’s Cody Brookwell’s shot was deflected past Dowd.
Sheffield levelled three minutes later (27;36) from Phil Hill, who has tried hard to make an impact with limited ice time since moving from Cardiff.
But the champions seized the initiative and 2-1 lead through Colin Shields.
Steelers looked vulnerable but found a second wind and Dowd made it 2-2 at 37;25.
The third session was goalless - setting up the astonishing finale as the underdogs lifted silverware.
It was a fantastic achievement for stand-in coach Gerad Adams - who has lost four finals as a coach.
*Earlier, in the third/fourth place match, at the NIC, Braehead Clan beat Fife Flyers 7-6.
Ed McGrane’d game winner came in overtime.
