Sheffield Steeldogs gave youth its chance by playing some talented teenagers in a ‘crossover’ Challenge Cup.

With Solway Sharks arriving with just 11 skaters (and missing their first choice netminder), they were never going to provide much opposition to Steeldogs who chose to play without any imports.

The game felt more like a training match. Cole Shudra, 16, played a regular shift and George Crawshaw, 17, saw lots of ice time in the final period - having already played 60 minutes for the Steeldogs Academy on the other pad.

Two other 17 years olds took their opportunity with Cam Brownley scoring a two goals and Tom Barry playing a confident, man of the match winning role on defence. Steeldogs won 7-1.

Coach Andre Payette: “I thought Cole was awesome, he picked up an assist, he hit the crossbar once and didn’t look out of place on this team. Cam Brownley played well, got two goals - he’s a 17 year old who is on a two year contract with us. Young Tom Barry was man of the match, another 17 year old. It’s great, we want to work with young kids and get them to the next level”.

Next home game: Sunday 19th 5.30 v Basingstoke Bison.
