Sheffield Steeldogs forward Tom Squires says their fundraising match with Scimitars All Stars will be a day to celebrate ahead of the tenth anniversary of Scimitars’ Grand Slam victory.

The one-off clash, at iceSheffield on August 2, will raise money for Issabelle’s Appeal, the Sheffield Academy and the newly-formed Steeldogs development fund.

Two former All Star players have already been unveiled following Monday’s initial announcement.

Matt Haywood, the younger brother of current Steeldogs defenceman Lee Haywood, and Arran Strawson are the first two former Scimitars’ players to confirm their place in the roster.

“It is going to be a special day for the fans and players,” Squires told Grass Roots.

“A lot of the players who turn out for the All Stars will be those who grew up watching them and played for them, there will be no pressure on the players on the day, it is a day to celebrate the heritage and honour those who have been part of the set-up.”

With plans also already in place for Dogs coach Andre Payette and his team to travel to France for a pre-season tournament near the end of the month, August is an important period towards the preparation of the new season.

Squires said of the All Stars clash: “It’s a day to bring former players back who won that Grand Slam, honour former and current members and it is also a great chance to introduce Jeff Legue.

“He is a big name and it will be the first chance for fans to see him play in a Steeldogs’ shirt and it will certainly add to the occasion.”

n Steeldogs’ Academy still has places for the start of its second year. Two of its members, Cam Brownley and Tom Barry are joining the Steeldogs first team next season.
