Penalty shot win for the Dogs

A penalty shoot-out victory at Bracknell Bees (5-4) brought two weekend points for Sheffield Steeldogs.

But the side also lost at home, 3-2 at iceSheffield to Peterborough Phantoms. Going into the weekend with the lower three teams on 16 points, Steeldogs had to at least beat Bracknell to remain in play-off position.

Against Peterborough, the visitors took the lead through Brit Joe Miller, before Andre Payette tipped in a powerplay goal from Steve Duncombe and Janis Ozolins scored a go-ahead goal at 28.53, beating Stephen Wall on a breakaway. Steeldogs held their lead until less than six minutes from the end, when Maris Ziedins beat Ben Bowns from close range, and it was Ziedins who scored the game winner at 58.33.

In a fast-paced match at Bracknell, Dogs went ahead through Craig Elliott followed by a pair from Janis Ozolins helping the Steeldogs. A goal from Michael Pinc gave a score of 3-1 to Sheffield going into the first break. A strike from Shaun Ashton restored the three goal lead, but the Bees spent the rest of the regulation time on top, with a penalty shot scored by Cesky, a goal from Jasik, and an equaliser from Pinc forcing overtime.

It took six pairs of penalties to decide the game. Stuart Brittle scored, while Bowns saved Pelikovsky's attempt.
