SHEFFIELD Steeldogs put in a gritty display to beat Telford Tigers 3-2, rounding off a successful holiday programme.

Player coach Andre Payette said: “It was a fantastic gutsy performance by the team in all our games over the holiday period, especially following a two week lay-off; it was really great to pick up five points out of the available six.

“I am very proud of this team, not only in making it to the Cup Semi-finals, but also for finishing third in the top four of a very competitive 10 team league.

“I am looking forward to the Cup semis against Milton Keynes Lightning but we are not just content with this achievement, as we will be concentrating on the League position as well.”

Against Tigers, Steeldogs’ Janis Ozolins took a great pass from Andrew Hirst and buried the puck for the only goal of the first period. Tigers Mark Hornak, equalised off a rebound.

Steeldogs re-took the lead just 49 seconds after the break via Greg Wood. A minute later it was Edgars Bebris who scored at 41:48 to double the lead, assisted by Lloyd Gibson and Steve Duncombe. Telford raised the tension for the final minutes of the game after they pulled it back to a one goal game after Scott McKenzie scored at 51:43.
