Tom Squires was in red hot scoring for Sheffield Steeldogs, but could not steer them to a maximum point weekend.

The forward scored his side’s first goal at Milton Keynes watched by a partisan crowd of 2500. The hard-fought game went into overtime and Lubomir Korhon won it for the visitors.

But 24 hours later, at iceSheffield, they could not repeat the feat against Basingstoke Bison.

Squires scored twice before the middle period but his team were beaten 5-2.

Squires said: “Five on five, I think we outplayed Basingstoke. They capitalised on a five minute power-play and went 5-0 up. It’s hard to get back from that.

“We scored our two goals and it was a different game from there. We have to dust ourselves down and get ready for next weekend”.

Lee Haywood added: “We had a slow start and you can’t do that against Basingstoke. We fought back, played two lines, killed a few penalties but wasted power-plays. You can’t give a head start like that and win games”.
