Andre Payette, the Sheffield Steeldogs coach, is targeting skilled former Coventry Blaze forward Greg Chambers.

The EPL club are in talks with several overseas players as Payette looks to find a playmaker ahead of next season.

One of the names on his hit list is Chambers. The 30-year-old Canadian right-winger played for Basingstoke Bison last season.

Payette is also considering a move for Czech Republic centre Tomas Karpov, 24, who excelled last term for Telford Tigers.

“We are working hard to try and find our final import player” Payette said.

“We have been in talks with a few players and one of the players we really are looking at is Chambers. We are also looking at Tomas Karpov and we are keeping tabs on a couple of Czech players who will be new to the country.

“Greg has been on our radar for a couple of years. He was Basingstoke’s leading scorer last season and we see him as a great offensive player. It’s important we bring in a quality player to fill our last import position and have a really good team for next season. We are looking for a playmaker, a guy that compliments Lubomir Korhon.”

Payette has tied down Lloyd Gibson, 23, for another season.

“He has signed a one-year contract and really came into his own last year, he can score goals, is good defensively and it’s great that one of our leaders and one of our Sheffield lads will be back for next season.

“Lloyd is a leader; he works 100% all the time and is a player that all our young Sheffield lads want to be like. He is a professional, he comes to work every day.”

With a number of players still yet to commit themselves to the Steeldogs, the coach insists he will be giving game time to some of Sheffield’s upcoming stars.

“A couple of our Sheffield players are moving on next year, Shaun Wild who has been with us for two years is going down south to play for a team down there.

“It looks like Stuart Brittle and Bradley Day will be moving on as well.”
