Great Britain made a disappointing start to their World Championship Division 1 Group B campaign as they were beaten 4-0 by Croatia in Lithuania.

Michael Novak put Croatia ahead at 12.56 before Dario Kostovic doubled their lead with just 41 seconds of the first period remaining.

Alan Letang (27.26) extended Croatia’s advantage with the only goal of the middle session and Kostovic added his second at 46.12 which prompted ex Sheffield Steelers coach Doug Christiansen to replace off-form goaltender Stephen Murphy with Rotherham-born Ben Bowns.

Croatia goalie Mate Tomljenovic made 33 saves to shut GB out and was named man of the match.

Christiansen, said: “I am very disappointed with the outcome but I tip my hat to Croatia. They were outstanding and buried their chances.

“In the first and second periods, we had lots opportunities and got pucks to the net, but we did not win battles at the net.

“It seemed as though when they went down the ice it ended up in the back of our net.

“We have got to pick ourselves up tomorrow. We have got to be better than we were today.”

GB face Romania in their second game of the tournament tomorrow at 11am UK time.
