SHEFFIELD Steelers have been hit by a close-season blow.
New player coach Ryan Finnerty - whose game is built around energetic, aggressive play - is bed-bound after suffering a herniated spinal disc.
The material that wedges between spinal vertebra has been pushed out of position, leading to excruciating pain. Finnerty, back home in Canada, is hoping treatment and rest will see him fit for the new season. He says: “I am laid up in bed; it’s the worst pain I’ve experienced a long time.”
He still aims to be back in Sheffield in July to complete pre-season preparations.
Finnerty, aged 30, was a 62-game ever-present for Cardiff Devils last season.
