The Swedish centreman was arguably Sheffield's best player in the 2016-17 season. But after the team, generally, disappointed the following year, he was not invited back by then-coach Paul Thompson.

Valdix surfaced at the deeply-troubled Milton Keynes Lightning club, which had financial issues and has now dropped out of the Elite League.

While other players departed, Valdix stayed with MK, scoring 46 points in 57 games - not bad considering the team lost 45 of 60 games.

But now, The Star understands, he has made an inquiry to Sheffield to see if he can return. He has retained links with the area and would be following countryman Jonas Liwing, who joined the club this week. Talks are underway.

The 34-year-old forward may once have been a key component under Thompson, but after his time away, he may have to settle for a place down the pecking order.

If for argument sake, he came in as a third liner, he'd presumably be making less than when he was at the House of Steel previously.

Meanwhile, no decision has been made yet on whether Mark Matheson, defenceman and last year's player assistant coach, will return.

There is movement either on Tanner Eberle or news on whether Evan McGrath will return for the second year of his deal.

The rumour mill suggests Steelers defenceman Josh McFadden has now signed for a German second division team.
