Sheffield Steeldogs finally achieved their long awaited win against Manchester Phoenix on home ice and it was a well deserved victory.

Steeldogs celebrated ecstatically after Ben Morgan scored the winning sudden death OT goal at iceSheffield.

After demolishing Slough Jets away on Saturday in a 9-2 goalfest, they returned to Sheffield for the usual tight, fast-paced and feisty game with their arch rivals.

Although Steeldogs edged the possession in the opening minutes, it was Manchester who took the lead at 8:34 as Ben Wood fired the puck in on a well-taken penalty shot, leaving Sheffield chasing an equaliser.

There was plenty of action on and off the puck during the game but incredibly, for a Steeldogs v Phoenix game, the game was allowed to flow for almost the entire 60 minutes, bar one two minute penalty on Payette at 12:22. Ben Bowns made some more top draw saves to prevent Phoenix doubling their lead before Steeldogs’ Janis Ozolins grabbed the equaliser at the other end at 36:33.

Steeldogs outshot Manchester but found Steve Fone hard to beat in goal. Overtime was needed to separate the teams but it only took two minutes for Morgan to fire in the winning goal after receiving a pass out from behind the net by Greg Wood.
