Hobson pep talk puts Nicki back on track

HOT prospect Nicki Smedley today admitted he was having to put his career back on track.

The unbeaten lightweight, who is being groomed by Dennis Hobson’s Fight Academy, is determined to shrug off a few mixed months and chalk up some convincing victories.

Outings in Las Vegas, the mecca of world boxing, and more recently in Dublin leave the 21 year old keen to fight at home, too.

He gets the chance on September 29 when he boxes on Clinton Woods’ undercard at Sheffield Arena.

Recently Woods warned Smedley about the dangers of taking it easy, in between bouts.

And today Smedley admitted: “I’ve had an up and down year so far.

“The experience of Vegas was fantastic and any fighter in the world who has ambition would cut their arms off for the opportunity.

“The atmosphere in Dublin was absolutely fantastic; I loved the buzz of the crowd.

“To be honest, I lost a bit of focus in the middle of the year, but I had a chat with my promoter Dennis, my dad and Richard (Poxon, trainer) and discussed a way to get back into it.

“I’m lucky in that me and Dennis have got a great relationship and he’s shown patience with me and has got me back on track.

“I want to put on a great performance in front of my Sheffield fans. I’m sure that there’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

Asked about stablemate Woods, he added “ I watched Clinton training with Richard on Monday and he’s looking in fantastic condition.

“To say he had that lay-off, you wouldn’t think it to watch him. I think he’ll smash Julio Gonzalez this time!”
