Heartbreak for Winstanley as Adams retains BDO title

SWINTON-born thrower Dean Winstanley slipped to a heartbreaking 7-5 defeat to number one seed Martin Adams in a pulsating BDO World Darts final last night.

Father-of-five Winstanley, making his first appearance in the championships, missed out on the 100,000 winner's prize despite a gutsy performance against Adams.

Winstanley, who now lives in Conisbrough, said: "The better man won on the night. I put up a good fight in my first ever final."

The 29-year-old machine driver and third seed defeated Martin Atkins, Robbie Green, Stephen Bunting and Jan Dekker en route to the showpiece final.

In front of a raucous crowd at Frimley Green, it was Adams who made a bright start, taking a 2-0 lead, including a 161 checkout.

But Winstanley, who was plying his trade in a local Monday night league in Doncaster two years ago, bravely fought back and went 4-3 and then 5-4 ahead.

However, Adams kept his nerve and reeled off three sets in a row to clinch his third Lakeside crown.

The 54-year-old Londoner, a winner in 2007 and 2010, said: "I had to dig deep. Deano had me in all sorts of problems.

"I thought 'what do I have to do now?'

"It means it's number three and that equals one or two records. I want to win a third one next year for the hat-trick."

Former Swinton School pupil Winstanley pocketed a 30,000 cheque for finishing runner-up.

In 2010, Winstanley scooped the German Open title and then the England and Belgium Open Singles and Pairs championships.
