A Chesterfield golf captain is celebrating after becoming the first player from his club to win the Sayers Cup in more than 40 years.

Tom Booth, captain of Tapton Park Golf Club, was awarded the trophy at a Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs event, by Andy Beardsley, chairman at Tapton Park.

Tom, 22, competed as part of a team for the Drabble Cup at Chevin before each team captain went on to play for the Sayers Cup.

It makes Tom the first winner of the Sayers Cup from Tapton Golf Club since 1972 and one of the youngest club captains to win the prize.

Tom, who has been playing golf since the age of 14, said: “I’m thrilled to have won the Sayers Cup while representing my team. I won a couple of events as a junior but it doesn’t compare – this is a real achievement.

“You can only be captain for one year so I’m really happy I got the chance to compete.”

Tom, who also runs the club’s league team, added: “I will continue playing golf as I want to see how good I can get.”
