BALBY Academy of Sport successfully defended the South Yorkshire Schools’ Golf Championship crown they won for the first time last year, at Hickleton.
Their trio of Lewis Gill (43 points) , Jamie McDonald (35) and Joseph King (26) beat Maltby School by one shot in the stableford event which saw the two best scores count.
Balby second team (Jamie Harrison 41, Nick Poppleton 36, Guy Winstanley 34) were second.
It was the College’s third team team title of the season following their success in the Bassetlaw and Doncaster schools events.
They also qualified for the National finals in both of the Intercollegiate Tour and the ISGA Tour.
Harrison (scratch) took the honours in the individual event with a cracking five under-par 66 to give him a winning margin of three shots.
It was another magnificent achievement by Harrison, who is now 12 under-par for his last three rounds in the Doncaster college side. Gill was unlucky to be pushed down to third place after carding a two under-par 69 losing out on second place to a better last six holes after both players were three under-par for the back nine holes.
“Yet again an excellent effort in which the students did us proud,” said Ian Lindley, Director of the Golf Academy.
“They were excellent ambassadors for the college and continued to show the highest of standards expected off them both on and off the golf course.”
Balby are one of three teams to reach the Yorkshire Schools’ Championships at Low Laithes Golf Club tomorrow. If they win they will qualify for the English Schools Team Championship at Woodhall Spa Golf Club in July, for the third year running.
