Italy’s Francesco Molinari swith a 68 led the way on a miserable day at Wentworth as Ryder Cup team-mate Luke Donald’s bid for a third successive BMW PGA Championship title came to a premature end.

Rory McIlroy (75), Graeme McDowell (75) and Ian Poulter (76) all joined Donald (78 and then 72) in missing the halfway cut.

Lee Westwood and Ernie Els - playing alongside Molinari - were three off the lead after rounds of 71 and 69 respectively.

Westwood’s chipping and putting has long been his Achilles heel, but the 40-year-old said: “My short game’s been red hot.”
