Balby Academy of Sport’s Joel Cartlidge has won the Northern Schoolboys Championship at Denton Golf Club, Manchester.

Joel, a member of Wheatley Golf Club where he plays off scratch, now qualifies for the English Schools Championships at Hollinwell Golf Club, Nottingham on June 24.

At Denton he was representing Yorkshire and playing against all of the top school students from Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire, Cheshire, Durham, Greater Manchester and Lincolnshire.

The event was played over 36 holes and after the morning round Joel was 1 shot behind early leader Jack Duncalf from Sandiway Golf Club, Cheshire after shooting a 1 under par 70which included five birdies to offset his four bogeys.

In the afternoon the conditions proved far more testing as the wind increased making club selection tricky. However after battling these conditions Joel managed three birdies to score 74 and be crowned champion with a +2 total score narrowly defeating Rhys NevisWharton also from Sandiway.

By being crowned North of England Schools champion Joel follows in the footsteps of other European Tour players like David Horsey.
