AN excellent run of birdies on the homeward stretch proved decisive for James French at the latest Sheffield PGA event.

James, from Owston Hall GC, found like the rest of the field early on that it wasn’t easy out at Sickleholme and, in fact, was quite tricky with windy conditions and some testing pin positions.

He had an average front nine, scoring 39 but turned for home and fired three birdies to finish with a two over 71.

It gave him victory by two strokes from Nigel Parkinson of Renishaw and Bondhay’s Justin Fores who both hads 73s.

In fourth place two shots further back on 75 were Jason Ripley of Rother Valley and Stephen Roberts of Beauchief.

*Tiger Woods has dropped down to No 15 in the latest World rankings having slipped out of the top 10 last week for the first time in a decade.

Luke Donald still leads the way with Lee Westwood in second spot.
