Golden oldie Broughton seals double

AFTER waiting so long for his first Doncaster trophy, Alan Broughton (Parklands) added the Doncaster Over 60s Merit to the Pensioners Merit he had won five days earlier.

In doing so, Broughton becomes only the second bowler to win both trophies in the same season, after the legendary Bill Wardman (Armthorpe), who achieved the feat three times - in 1992, 1994 and 2006.

Broughton was on fine form all day, defeating two bowlers who had both won the senior trophy twice - John Clewer of Armthorpe Welfare and Sid Price of Denaby Welfare - in his first two games, before facing Bawtry’s Barry Binks in the final.

Broughton was first out of the blocks, leading 5-1 before Binks edged back at him taking the lead at 7-6 and 9-7. Broughton levelled at 9-all, and won five of the next seven ends (which were all singles) to lead 14-11.

Two pairs from Binks put him back in front, only for the Parklands man to record three twos to stand 20-15 up. Binks again rallied, scoring three singles to trail 18-20, but Broughton was not to be denied, winning the next end for a 21-18 win.

Results: First round: Alan Broughton (Parklands) 21 John Clewer (Armthorpe Welfare) 10, Brian Hardy (Tickhill) 19, Sid Price (Denaby Welfare) 21, Barry Binks (Bawtry) 21 Brian Greaves (Thorne Colliery) 11, Derek Wykes (Bawtry) bye , Richard Curtis (Tickhill) scratched.

Semi-finals: Alan Broughton 21 Sid Price 10, Barry Binks 21 Derek Wykes 9.

Final: Alan Broughton 21 Barry Binks 18.
