Preston North End have signed the Stoke City and ex Blades midfielder Michael Tonge on loan.
The 26-year-old joined the Potters for 2m from Sheffield United on the last day of the transfer window in September 2008.
However, the one-time Manchester United youth team player has not featured in the Premier League this season, with his three appearances all coming in the Carling Cup.
Tonge, who will stay with North End until after the game at his former club Sheffield United on 28 December, will go straight into the squad for Monday night's televised clash with Newcastle United at Deepdale.
"I'm delighted, I need to get out and play some football" he said.
Life at Stoke was "frustrating and disappointing - everybody wants to play" he said after being an automatic choice at Bramall Lane.
Manchester-born Tonge hopes to be picked against Newcastle United in his first game and then in the Lancashire derby against Blackpool.
