Youngsters in cup goal spree

Chesterfield's youth team comfortably progressed to the second round of the Midland Youth Cup, seeing off Hinckley United 5-0 at Saltergate.

Ben Algar, the 17-year-old who made such an impression in Spireites recent League One win over Bury, grabbed the opener with a low, angled shot before twice crossing for Jake Williams to head home.

Two goals early in the second half, from Richie Holmes and Thomas Cooper-Richards increased the gap but the non-leaguers then shut up shop to prevent Dave Bentley's men adding to the score.

It was a good turnaround for the youngsters who, hit by illness last weekend, slumped to a 4-1 loss against Lincoln City, their first league defeat, a setback that was exacerbated by Williams being dismissed for receiving two yellow cards.

Meanwhile Gareth Davies, out with a broken toe since pre-season and on loan Blades man Nicky Travis, who picked up an ankle injury on his first day at Saltergate, are now both back in full training with the first team.

Officials at Mansfield Town will come under scrutiny this week. They should have sent 1300 tickets for sale to Chesterfield fans in accordance with safety regulations, but 1900 were dispatched by mistake, a blunder that will come under the microscope at a Safety Advisory Group meeting.
