Women's Football: Sheffield FC Women suffer sobering loss away at Burnley - Sheffield Wednesday hit 14 goals

The sobering result leaves Sheffield second-bottom in the table.

They are three points behind Loughborough Foxes, although they have played two games more.

Sheffield visit Division One North leaders Barnsley this Sunday (3pm) for a South Yorkshire derby and with a place in the third round of the Women’s FA Cup up for grabs.

In the Reserve League Cup group games Sheffield FC lost 2-0 at home to Hull City, while Jade Butcher and Lauren Wilcock scored for Barnsley in their 4-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

In the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA Women’s Challenge Cup second round, six of the delayed ties were resolved last weekend.

There were no shocks, but plenty of goals including welcome ones for the Wednesday pair of Jess Birtles and Emma Otley who both found the scoresheet following lengthy spells out injured.

The Owls ladies sealed a 14-0 romp over Thurcroft Miners.

As well as the aforementioned duo, Sophie Eyre hit five, Jessica Morrison four, Channy Rymer two and Fay Cassidy also got in on the act.

Elsewhere, there were walkovers for Rotherham United (versus Handsworth home) and AFC Doncaster (versus Millmoor Reserves away).

Meanwhile, Sheffield United Women made a winning start to their latest “home” at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium, which is also due to stage some of Chesterfield Women’s home games this season.

Aimee Palmer's solo strike sealed the points against Durham in a slender 1-0 victory for the Blades.

This Sunday Carla Ward's side are on the road at London City Lionesses (2pm).
