Women's Football: Mollie seals hat-trick as Barnsley hit 10 past Sheffield Wednesday

Barnsley began their defence of the Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA Women’s Challenge Cup with a 10-0 trouncing over local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Two goals inside the first ten minutes all but ended any prospect of Wednesday causing an upset.

Mollie Crump bagged a hat-trick with Kim Brown and Kathryn Smith adding braces.

Sophie Bell, Annie Ward and Lissa Woodhouse were also on target as Barnsley recorded the third round’s highest score and claimed a place in the last-eight.

The last four finals have been contested by Barnsley and Huddersfield Town (two wins apiece) and if the pair are kept apart in the draw, a fifth such encounter is very likely.

Town advanced via a walk-over away to Sheffield Wednesday Development.

Barnsley Reserves trailed 1-0 to their Sheffield FC counterparts, Caitlan Ross the scorer, but a much-improved second half display which included three goals in the closing stages helped the former progress.

They eventually ran out prolific 6-1 winners with Ellie Brightmore hitting the target four times and Emily Pierrepont adding two goals.

Socrates produced one of the competition’s all-time upsets as they edged out Wakefield Trinity 4-3 after extra time to reach the last eight for the second season running.

While Wakefield are just a tier higher, two divisions separated the pair last term.

Sophie Shemeld netted the extra time clincher after Sally Lowe (2) and Beth Hardy had scored in 90 minutes for Socrates.

The woodwork, which came to AFC Doncaster’s rescue on several occasions, prevented Doncaster Rovers Belles winning by more than an early goal from Nadia Khan at home to their neighbours.

Three ties were postponed.

Chesterfield were agonisingly close to claiming a place in the Derbyshire County FA Women’s Cup Final.

Their semi-final against Long Eaton United (two tiers higher) at the Proact Stadium ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The tie went straight to penalties with Long Eaton eventually going through 8-7.

Sheffield United will begin 2020 with two of the biggest games in their history. They host Aston Villa on January 12 and then face Manchester City in the Continental Tyres Cup quarter-finals the following midweek.
