The Football Association, Premier League and EFL have announced a new annual Mid-Season Player Break, starting from the 2019/20 season.
The break will take place in February but will only affect the Premier League and not the EFL which covers the Championship, Leagues One and Two.
The 10-day hiatus will come into force for the 2019/20 season.
The governing body has also agreed to move the FA Cup fifth round fixtures to midweek and scrap replays.
Martin Glenn, FA Chief Executive, said: "This is a significant moment for English football and one that we believe will greatly benefit both club and country.
"It’s no secret that we have a very congested fixture calendar and over recent years we have been working with the whole game to find a solution."
