Wilson: 'We'll try and get some pride back at Rochdale'

Last week the Chesterfield boss promised to make changes for the Trophy fixture, with one eye on an important League One clash at Peterborough on Saturday.

But after a chastening 5-0 beating at the hands of Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup, Wilson would not confirm whether or not he still planned to give key players a break.

When asked if he would still be making changes, he simply replied: “We’ll see.”

He does see the game as a chance to lift some of the gloom around the club following such a disappointing cup exit.

“We’ve got a game on Tuesday, we’ll try and get some pride back in that game,” he said.

Last week when asked about the much maligned EFL Checkatrade Trophy, Wilson again let fly with strong criticism of the competition – specifically rules he feels are unfair for lower league clubs like the Spireites.

“I think everyone has been speaking about that,” he said.

“It’s proving to be a bit of a problem for some clubs and I don’t think it’s been helped by the organisation itself, how they want players to be eligible or not eligible for it, certainly for the Championship and Premier League clubs.

“That’s causing me a bit of a problem.

“It’s rules for some and rules for others and that’s not right.”

Chesterfield’s company secretary Ashley Carson, in charge of the club’s current financial crisis, apologised to fans for Saturday’s FA Cup horrow show in a tweet, calling the display ‘totally not acceptable in any way.’
