Wilson not panicking, but change in recruitment policy requires patience

There's no panic at the Proact despite picking up just one win in their last nine League One games.

Danny Wilson insists his side are good enough and believes nerves might be jangling among supporters because Saturday’s result at Southend saw Chesterfield drop into the relegation places.

“I’m not panicking but some people may be,” he said.

“There’s one result and all of a sudden you get scrutinised even more because you’ve fallen one place below the line.

“Our performances over the season so far have been quite promising but we’re in a position that puts people’s nerves on edge.

“But we’re not panicking, we know we’re good enough.

“I believe in what we have in front of us, when we’re all fit and when we can put our strongest team out. Then you’ll see a big difference.”

Tonight Chesterfield host Fleetwood Town and Wilson says a victory will calm the nerves of anyone worried about the drop.

“On our day we can beat anybody,” he said.

“But we’ve got to get through this tough time.

“If we can get a good win on Tuesday then I think everyone will settle down a bit.

“It’s not nice to be down the bottom of the table but there’s a small gap between us and the top 10 so we’re not too worried about that.”

Chesterfield have been contending with an injury crisis, having to use youngsters to plug gaps on the pitch left by senior players who are now in the treatment room.

Wilson says that’s a result of the club’s desire to produce and develop their own talent and people have got to get used to it.

“If we want to be a club that produces young players and brings young players in then patience has to come with it. From my point of view it comes in abundance,” he said.

“The goalposts have moved drastically, we’re changing direction in our recruitment in particular.

“We’ve had to cut the wage bill accordingly and tried to bring young players in and when you do that you take a little bit of pain as well.

“That’s the norm, people judge you on every result and it won’t change. I would like to think we’ll see them get better.”
