Normally at this time of the year the Derbyshire Times and The Star team up to hold the annual Football Awards.

It’s an opportunity for our football writers to choose their Player of the Year for the club they cover as well as pick the winners for a number of other categories.

Of course this year we were unable to organise our usual ceremony which often runs into the early hours and ends up with everyone feeling rather hungover the next day.

But we still felt it was important to mark what would have been the 14th annual Football Awards with...wait for it...a beer and a chat on Zoom!

On Monday evening I was joined by my colleagues who cover Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham United and Barnsley on the video app to discuss our nominations.

For me there was only one winner for who my Chesterfield Player of the Year could be and that was Curtis Weston.

The 33-year-old scored six goals - including a couple of belters - in 31 starts.

His volley from the edge of the box against Yeovil Town will be a strong contender for the club’s Goal of the Season and who can forget that thunderous strike off the underside of the crossbar in the 94th minute against Wrexham to snatch all three points.

If the Spireites had been able to resume their season I would have fancied him to add at least two more goals to his tally which would be a good return from a midfield player in a struggling side.

As well as the goals, he was someone who stood out during those miserable winter months under John Sheridan. He kept running, tackling and battling and never gave up.

I like the fact he has been able to win over quite a few Town fans with his performances.

It is worth mentioning the performances of Shwan Jalal, David Buchanan and Tom Denton in the second half of the season and if Mike Fondop had continued his hot streak in front of goal into 2020 then he may have run Weston close.

Let’s hope for a tougher decision next year!
