Shwan Jalal is the only senior number one at the club with Luke Coddington out injured for the rest of the season.

Pemberton named Dylan Wharton on the bench in his first game in charge against Sutton United but the caretaker boss admitted he was not sure whether the young stopper is ready for first-team football.

“The first thing I felt I needed to address was the right-back situation and the next one I need to address is probably the situation with the goalkeeper because we have only really got one and two young lads,” Pemberton said.

“That is something I have been having sleepless nights over really, trying to get one to come in with experience because if anything happens to Shwan then I want one who can go in there and can still do the job without worrying how he is going to react and that is what I am looking at now.

“I am trying to get one who has got a little bit of experience than the two young lads who we have got.”

When asked if he was close to signing a goalkeeper Pemberton hinted that one deal may have fallen through.

He said: “You think you are there and then the rug gets pulled a little bit because like everything else trying to get someone to sit on your bench is very difficultt.

“Shwan has done well for us.

“I would like someone to come in and challenge Shwan because I think competition is the way to go.

“If you don’t have the competition people go stale but having said that we had three points against Sutton and part of that was the goalkeeper’s performance who made a great save at the end and he took some good crosses and I need to be fair to him.

“Bringing in a number one is a lot easier than bringing in someone who has got to fight.

“You want players to come in and fight for a place.”
