Mattock limped out against Luton with a hamstring injury and he has been able to recover during the international break.

But with a gruelling schedule coming up between now and the end of the year, Warne must weigh up the pros and cons of throwing his trusted left-back straight back in.

“The physios say there is a chance for this weekend,” the boss said. “It will depend on how much of a risk I want to take on him.

“We've got 11 games in five weeks up to Christmas. It's a call I have to make. He has trained this week and trained well. I'll have a look at him, see how he feels and make a decision before the game.

“At the moment, it's looking really promising. If I chose not to use him on Saturday, he will definitely be available to me on Tuesday.

“We're monitoring him. At this moment, it looks like he will be in contention for Saturday.

“Joe's injury wasn't as bad as first thought but we've gone on the side of real caution.”

There is further good news for Warne as Mattock's possible replacement Billy Jones is back from a knee injury.

“He's back in training and is available for squad contention this weekend,” Warne added. “His injury was just a little tear and was no drama.”

Warne will also have a decision to make in goal, with Jamal Blackman returning from parent club Chelsea, where he has been receiving treatment on an ankle injury.

It is not yet clear whether the problem has sufficiently cleared up for him to be involved in south Wales, but Warne has no issue with playing deputy Viktor Johansson.

“Jamal obviously came here as number one,” Warne said. “I told Viktor the situation but I always knew that if I had to throw Viktor in for one, two, 10, 20 games it wouldn't be an issue.

“I really like Viktor. I think he's one for the future. He didn't do himself any harm on his debut. Prior to that, though, Jamal had been playing injured and had done really well. I'm lucky that I've got three good goalkeepers, with Josh Vickers as well. It's a strong department.”
