The Spireites ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Tom Denton and Jordan Cropper either side of half-time to lift the Blues out of the relegation zone.

The defeat for Chorley means they remain rock-bottom of the division and are 17 points from safety.

Preece said: “There was not a lot between the teams but it is a set-piece which has probably changed the game again and I think that is the difference at this level. We probably have not learnt from the previous game and the previous game before that and we have got punished again.

“In between we have played okay without creating too many clear-cut chances.

“I felt we looked a little more threatening in the second-half.

“First-half we probably dominated possession, dominated area, but we did not create a lot. Once we got into the final third either the delivery was not right or we did not get shots off quick enough.

“At the other end they had very few opportunities but they had three or four attempts on goal and on the balance of play it should have been the other way.”

After Denton’s first-half header from a corner gave John Pemberton’s side the lead, Cropper fired in at the far post after a low cross from Nathan Tyson. But Preece felt it was fortuitous rather than good play.

“Unless he (Tyson) has got unbelievable awareness I honestly do not think he has picked him out,” Preece said. “I also don't know how he (Cropper) has got that - the wing-back - because he has been pushed back for most of the game. I could not understand how he got in on that. We will have to look back at that.”

Connor Hall pulled a goal back for the hosts with 15 minutes remaining but Town managed to hang on despite some nervy moments.

“You could see they were panicking towards the end and really we should have got something out of the game,” Preece added.
