'˜We need to know we can get through the hard times together'

What Chesterfield do on the training ground this summer will echo long into the latter stages of the League Two season says Scott Wiseman.

The new Spireites defender, signed last week after his release from Scunthorpe United, is one of those players who relishes a punishing pre-season regime.

“I love pre-season,” he said.

“I’m a bit of a gym and fitness guy, I relish those hard, tough days when lads are feeling they can’t do it and we can push them along.

“You can test yourself and really attack the session that’s been put on by the manager to make or break you.”

Wiseman believes gruelling fitness sessions will help Gary Caldwell’s new-look Town side to bond.

And that bond is what they’ll fall back on in the toughest parts of the promotion campaign.

“It’s important for team-spirit that everyone is together and gets through those hard times because later on in the season it’s going to be vital that we’ve got that mental strength.

“We need to know that in hard times, when you’re tired mentally or physically, together we can get through it.

“League One and League Two are tough, really tough physically and mentally.

“It’s going to a good togetherness within the squad to get us out of it.”

Chesterfield will be back in training around the middle of June, earlier than most other clubs, as Caldwell attempts to form a competitive side from a bunch of new signings and the players already at the Proact.

Wiseman understands why: “The manager wants to get a head start with everything.

“We know there’s going to be a lot of turnaround in faces, so everyone has to bed in and we need to hit the ground running.

“I’m excited to see where this can go and hopefully push Chesterfield back up into League One.”
