'˜We defended brilliantly,' says bullish boss Wilson

Boss Danny Wilson was making no bones about the quality on display, but he was not to be budged from his position that the result was a positive one.

He said: “That’s the ultimate (aim) isn’t it? To try and get a gap between us and the bottom four.

“Before the game it was four points, after the game five points, Doncaster have got no closer to us so that’s a bonus.

“It’s a game we needed to get something out of, a couple of results have gone for us, the other clubs will have been hoping they’d have got a draw and they didn’t, we did.”

At times on Tuesday Doncaster had their hosts on the ropes, attacking with the hunger of a side who knows they’re likely just one more defeat away from relegation.

On his own players’ performance Wilson was bullish, choosing to focus on the way they withstood the onslaught.

“The performance was nervy, they played well at times in the game and put us under pressure in the last 10 or 15 minutes, but we defended brilliantly,” he insisted.

“Tommy hasn’t had to save to make, even though they put pressure on us, we defended really, really well.

“Overall we know we can play better, but we have to stay in a position to stay in this league and if it means grinding a result out like that, I’ll take it every week.”

The nervous tension was palpable and had a bearing on what transpired on the pitch, said Wilson.

“We’d have liked to have done better at certain parts, of course we would, but there’s a nervousness about us at home.

“If a pass goes astray and the fans have a little bit of a moan up, it tranfers onto the players.

“There’s no hiding that fact, and then they get a bit nervous and the younger ones don’t know what to do, they’ve never been in this position before.”

“And then all of a sudden you’re not keeping possession like you should.

“But this has been a difficult season for the club and we’re battling away. We’re fighting for our lives.”
