Two years ago on 15th March, Oxford United were the Spireites’ visitors, and went home empty handed after a 3-0 defeat.

Ollie Banks was on the scoresheet, along with Gary Roberts who bagged a brace, including a spot-kick.

In 2008, Chesterfield were beaten 2-1 by Rotherham United, who were just days away from a court appearance where they were hit by a 10-point penalty for going into administration, a blow that would destroy their promotion hopes.

Jamie Ward got the goal for the Spireites, who finished eighth, directly above the Millers in League Two that season, thanks to the points deduction.

Notts County hosted Chesterfield on this day in 2003, and the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in front of 6,801 spectators – Caleb Folan, a former Leeds United striker, on the scoresheet for the visitors.

In 1997 the Spireites beat Wycombe Wanderers 4-2 at Saltergate, and three years earlier took three points from a visit to Hereford, winning 3-0.

That 1993/94 season saw Chesterfield finish eighth in Division Three.

Saltergate played host to a game against Hereford United in 1975, Chesterfield running out 4-1 winners.

In 1972 Tranmere Rovers provided the opposition for a 2-2 draw at Saltergate, a year to the day since Chesterfield drew by the same scoreline against near neighbours Mansfield Town at Field Mill on their way to a fifth place finish in Division Three.

The Stags also finished on 51 points, but were two places lower than Chesterfield due to inferior goal difference.

In 1968 Doncaster Rovers got the better of Chesterfield by a single goal at Belle Vue.

On Saturday 15th March 1958, Stockport County were defeated 2-1 at Saltergate, in Chesterfield’s final season in the English Third Division North.

Southport were the visitors in 1952 and were beaten 2-0.
