Wilson, who made 100 appearances for the Spireites in the early 1980s, has been out of management since leaving Barnsley in February.

He is relishing the challenge presented to him and is looking to quickly stamp his mark on the team, saying: “I want the players to play with freedom and play the standard of football they’re capable of playing.

“I think they find themselves in false position and the sooner we can get a couple of wins, the better.

“I’ve become attached to Chesterfield - having lived in the town for over 30 years – and I’m very privileged to become the new manager.”

Spireites chief executive Chris Turner said: “I like how Danny operates, having worked with him previously at Hartlepool and he has a great deal of experience.

“There was a lot of interest in the job and we carefully considered our options before deciding that Danny was the ideal man to take the club forward.”

Wilson, 55, is among a selected band of managers who have taken charge of over 1,000 competitive matches.

His previous managerial jobs have included spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Bristol City and Swindon Town.

The length of Wilson’s contract has not been disclosed, but Spireites chiefs have confirmed it is beyond the end of the current season.
