The midfielder, who has been influential to the Millers so far this season, suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 loss at Stoke on Saturday.

He limped off just before the hour and the club are waiting for results of a scan he underwent on Monday evening.

If there is no damage, he could be involved against the Hatters.

Boss Paul Warne said: “Shauny Mac is of the Richard Wood mantle that he doesn't go down unnecessarily,” he said.

“I heard him scream, he has had a knee problem before, I was a bit anxious of that. He was in pain so I made the change, he wanted to play on but by the time he got to me he was stiffening up, so that is obviously going to be a scan, but hopefully he will be OK.

“He has been instrumental for us at the start of the campaign, so hopefully he is not injured, especially for the long term.

“All the rest of the lads are fit and raring to go, it's just a disappointment about Shaun.”

The Millers slipped to another defeat at Stoke in a game where they might have taken a point.

Those are beginning to rack up and Warne knows his side have to find a way of adding to their tally even when they are not at their best.

He added: “If we are going to have a great season we need to be picking up points even when we are not at our best and at Stoke we weren't at our best, but I thought we did enough for a draw.

“We haven't got that, but we go into our next two home games with optimism that we can pick up points.

“The Norwich game I feel robbed with, the Birmingham game I feel robbed with, the Huddersfield game I feel robbed with. It happens all the time, it doesn't just happen to us.

“At Stoke a 0-0, would I have taken it after 20 minutes, possibly. We came here to win but we just looked a little bit under-cooked.”
