UNWANTED Blade Jamie Ward will return to the Derby squad for the visit of Doncaster Rovers tonight.

The striker, on loan from Sheffield United, was ineligible against his parent club last Saturday as the Rams halted a nine-game winless league run at Bramall Lane.

The 24-year-old former Chesterfield man was loaned out after Blades management questioned his commitment and application. It led to a bust-up and 11 days ag, Ward was suddenly on his way out of the club. He is likely to make the move permament in the close season, if he gets the nod from Nigel Clough.

Clough believes the player is similar in style to Paul Dickov,

The manager said: “He upsets defenders and doesn’t give them a minute’s rest.

“It would be nice if Jamie had the kind of effect Dickov had on the team.

“This is the kind of impact players can have when they come in fresh, especially a striker or a player in a forward position because they can get a goal or make a goal, they can lift the crowd with their work rate.

“Paul Dickov had the ability to do that and we hope Jamie can. Players like that can lift the others.”

Ward has made two appearances for Derby, the 0-0 tie at Scunthorpe and the 1-0 defeat by Hull City.

Dean Leacock could also come back into the reckoning for Derby after a bout of illness. However, the central defensive partnership being formed between Shaun Barker and Daniel Ayala is likely to see him start on the bench.
