Gozie Ugwu is out to prove he can be as prolific in League Two as he was in the National League after his best ever season.

The striker, signed today after his departure from Woking, hit the net 22 times in the 2016/17 campaign.

He admits his goalscoring exploits may have taken a few people by surprise, but it’s something he knew he was capable of.

“Definitely (it was my best season) but it was something I expected of myself,” he said.

“I thought as long as I get regular games somewhere, I could prove myself.

“That was the first time I’ve had that, at Woking last season.

“A few eyebrows were probably raised but for myself it was something I expected to do.”

Ugwu credits former Woking boss Garry Hill for helping him to start realising his potential last season.

The 24-year-old felt he needed the backing of a manager and Hill provided just that.

“It was him that probably changed a lot of things for me, I just needed that person to believe in me and give me that run of games I was so eager to get,” he said.

“He was definitely that person that showed faith in me and he showed it throughout the season.

“I was always willing to pay him back through what I could do on the pitch, working hard for the team and scoring goals.”

Although Ugwu has experience in Leagues One and Two after spells with the likes of Wycombe and Yeovil, but knows he still has to make his name as a striker who can produce, regularly, at this level.

“I was here with Wycombe and didn’t get the run of games I wished for.

“I felt like I left with a lot to prove.

“Coming back is another opportunity to show what I can do.

He certainly doesn’t lack self belief, however.

Ugwu is convinced that he can replicate last season’s success in front of goal for Chesterfield.

All he says he needs is a run of games.

“I‘m confident that as long as I play games I’ll be able to score goals.

“I’m eager to come here and prove that as well.

“People might have questions because it’s a step up but I did what I was expected to do last season and I’m going to do that again this season.”
