SHEFFIELD United needed a Nick Blackman goal six minutes from time to earn a draw at Coventry City.

United had fallen behind in the 62 minute to a Stephen Elliott strike but Blackman maintained Danny Wilson’s team’s unbeaten start to the League One campaign from close range.

Blades’ Matthew Hill was the first name in the referee Paul Tierney’s notebook after a foul on Adam Barton.

Chances were at a premium in the early stages with John Cofie having the first strike at goal. However, Stephen Elliott did well to block.

And just before the 15 minute mark the Sky Blues Irish midfielder Barton headed wide.

With more challenges going in than shots it was no surprise when the referee cautioned Coventry’s Elliott for his foul on Hill.

On 20 minutes Hill headed wide from Stephen Quinn’s inswinging corner. And then three times in the space of 10 minutes Barton blocked shots from Quinn, Cofie and Hill as United stepped up the pressure.

There was little quality to open the second half with a good block by United defender Neill Collins from Carl Baker being the one moment to get the crowd excited.

Barton was the next name taken by referee Tierney as he fouled Quinn.

Just before the hour Coventry twice went close with headers. First Cody McDonald nodded wide and then Elliott headed over from 18 yards out.

United replaced Cofie with Shaun Miller on 60 minutes but the warning signs were there for the Blades and on 63 minutes Elliott struck from close range into the roof of the net.

The Blades responded quickly and Saturday’s goal hero David McAllister was unlucky to see his shot fly over Joe Murphy’s crossbar.

Nick Blackman also shot over on 75 minutes as United pressed for an equaliser. It was a tense time in the home team’s defence as former Owls’ defender Richard Wood and McDonald both scrambled the ball away.

The pressure paid off for United in the 84th minute when Blackman got on the end of Miller’s pass to make it level.
