'This is for our fans'

MARK Robins dedicated Rotherham United's win in their first League Two home game yesterday to the Millmoor fans.

The Millers jumped up to third in the table after securing a 3-1 victory over Peterborough United who arrived having won both their two matches so far, including a Carling Cup success over Southampton.

The Rotherham manager said: "I think everyone was delighted with this and none more so than our supporters who were willing us to get off to a good start down here.

"There was always going to be a bit of extra interest in the game because of all that has surrounded us both this past week and throughout the summer.

"People had been favourable about our performance against Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday and, with it being on TV, we'd had a wider audience as well. I think people were looking at yesterday's game and seeing how we would compare.

"In addition, there was all the interest in us being a new-look side having made a lot of new signings and I think supporters were wanting to assess us and see what we'd be like when the league battle really started.

"There would have been people not really sure what to expect. The loyal fans down here suffered a lot of setbacks in the second half of last season and I think it was important for us to try and give them something right at the beginning of this campaign. I'm delighted we did that and this one was for them.

"It was a great result and an excellent performance but it means nothing more than three points. We'll be back in on Tuesday and starting preparation for the game at Stockport on Saturday."

Robins had suggested that Peterborough would give some indication where Rotherham stood in the rebuilding process because Posh were strongly fancied by everyone to go up and were most people's hot favourites.

Robins said: "They are a dangerous side and I think they showed that because they were always a threat. But I thought we were strong and solid and although they came at us in the second half, I felt we were comfortable and dealt with them quite well.

"But this was by no means an easy game – ask any of our lads.

"But I was just delighted at how we went about things. We got away to a good start and I think the goals will have done both strikers (Derek Holmes and Chris O'Grady) a power of good."

Robins made a couple of changes from the team that played last Thursday.

Marc Joseph came in at left back for his full debut with Paul Hurst on the bench whilst on-loan Marcus Bean made his first start replacing Stephen Brogan who had not recovered from a hamstring strain.

He said: "Paul Hurst hasn't put a foot wrong so far but I felt Marc Joseph would give us a bit of extra height. Stephen Brogan hadn't quite made it and I thought Marcus Bean came in and did well. "Positionally he was good and he kept the ball moving which is what we want."

Next Millmoor action is on Wednesday when the Millers reserves meet Nottingham Forest in the Pontins League Championship Play-Off Final (7pm) held over from last season.
