Sutton Rovers on brink of title after win at champions

SUTTON Rovers need only one point from their last two matches to lift the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division championship.

Chris Hancock scored both goals as Rovers accounted for reigning champions, AFC Sportsman Rovers 2-1.

Their main rivals, Rossington Main, kept their hopes alive with a 2-0 midweek success over Hatfield Main. Scott Maughan and Sean Nicholl shared out the Rossington goals. Two goals from Tom Salt put Bramley Sunnyside on the way to a 5-0 victory over Hatfield Main, Ian Donnelly, Ben Walker and Jordan Walker, completed the rout.

Hemsworth Town followed up a 4-2 win over Brodsworth Main in midweek with a 3-3 draw at neighbours South Elmsall United Services. Lee Dawes, Wayne Harratt, Kyle Lacy and Andrew Lowe, scored for Town against Main, David Clifton and Bradley Sanderson reducing the arrears.

Two goals from Harratt, plus one by Lacy, helped Hemsworth share the spoils at Services, who responded with a brace from Steve Nutter and a goal by Andrew Brown.

This was a dress rehearsal for South Elmsall and Town, who meet in the Premier Division KO Cup final on Yorkshire Main’s ground this Friday (7pm).

A hat-trick from Ben Pearson put Shafton Villa on the way to a 5-1 Division One triumph at ISG Doncaster, James Thompson and Ryan Butcher also netted for Villa with Adam Sierdadski replying for the home side.

Central Midlands League side, Yorkshire Main, retained the Doncaster and District FA Challenge Cup after beating Division One leaders Denaby United 1-0 in the final. Luke Hinsley with the goal.

Sutton Rovers claimed their first silverware with a 5-0 victory over Hatfield Main in the Goole and Thorne Challenge Cup final. Tom Doherty (2), Chris Hancock, Darren Smith and Daniel Bell scored.
