Super-sub Devaney scores with the boss

MARTIN Devaney is hell bent on making Simon Davey's job difficult.

Twice in the last three Barnsley games, Devaney has come off the bench and scored.

In less than 45 minutes on the pitch, he has registered two goals against Southampton and Bristol City.

Manager Davey has to decide tomorrow if the flying winger has landed a place in his team at Charlton.

Davey admits the case for Devaney is compelling.

"There's only one way to answer your manager if you're out of the side and that's to come on and score goals. It was a fantastic finish as well," Davey declared after Devaney struck in the 3-0 win over Bristol City on Tuesday.

"Martin was fantastic," he added.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce's form since his arrival from Southend in August has limited Devaney to waiting in the wings.

He has been patient so far.

"If I'm not in the team I'll try my best to get in it. If I've got the shirt I'll keep hold of it," he said.

"There are a lot of new players, we're seeing a lot of new things. It's down to the individuals who are not playing to get into the team."

He added: "I've done enough over the two years that I've been here; I don't have to prove anything to anyone.

"I'm a good player. If I'm not picked, not selected, I'll do my best to try and get in the team."

Davey's team, unbeaten in five, is pretty much picking itself at the moment.

Tomorrow will bring one of the toughest challenges so far.

Charlton, second in the Championship and three points ahead of Barnsley, are among the promotion favourites.

The Addicks stretched their unbeaten league run to seven games after a fiery 2-1 victory at Hull on Tuesday

Luke Varney's and Chris Iwelumo's goals were decisive, but the game will be remembered for an unpleasant bust-up which led to both sides being reduced to 10 men just before the break. The FA are investigating that fracas.

Charlton forward Lloyd Sam was red carded and will miss tomorrow. Svetoslav Todorov could take his place.

Matt Holland came through a recent Carling Cup game unscathed following knee surgery and will be in contention.

Yassin Moutaouakil is fit following an ankle injury but is being sidelined by the fine form of Danny Mills at right-back, while fellow ex-England defender Chris Powell continues to impress at left-back.
