Sheffield Wednesday kicked off the League One season at Charlton Athletic way back in August and welcomed over 24,000 for the first Hillsborough date against SOuth Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers.
But how do the Owls’ attendances stack up against those of their rivals, such as fellow former Premier League clubs Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic? Who has the smallest attendances?
In reverse order and according to renowned football statistics compiler Transfermarkt, here is every League One club’s average attendance so far this season – some of the numbers may just surprise you…

21. 5th: Bolton Wanderers 15,030
Fans didn't witness their drop into League Two last season, but they have responded in kind this time out, with the feeling that Ian Evatt's Trotters are building something. In handsome surroundings this season's average attendance is higher than they managed in the 2018/19 season - their last in the Championship. Photo: Nathan Stirk

22. 4th: Charlton Athletic
Another big club at this level with a sizeable stadium to boot, Charlton have struggled of late but are still attracting handsome crowds. Photo: Jacques Feeney

23. 3rd: Ipswich Town 20,784
Another sleeping giant at third tier level, Ipswich are ambitious on the field and have matched that off it, attracting an average of over 20,000 fans for the first time since the 2009/10 season. Photo: Stephen Pond

24. 2nd: Sheffield Wednesday 21,954
This time out, Wednesday have done that rare of things after a horror season - they increased their average attendance considerably. Nearly 22,000 have filed into Hillsborough week-on-week in this campaign, over 2,000 more than the next-best attended stadium. Expect that average attendance to increase as Wednesday's playoff push intensifies. Photo: George Wood
