Steels end drought but lose to Romulus

Have your say

Nathan Joynes’ late penalty ended both his and Stocksbridge Park Steels’ goal drought - but it wasn’t enough to prevent Steels slipping to a fourth straight defeat, as Romulus left Bracken Moor with the spoils from a 2-1 victory.

Stocksbridge, who had Lee Thompson and Alex Callery making their debuts, went behind on 18 minutes as Lee Smith nodded in from a corner.

The visitors doubled their lead four minutes into the second half through Rikardo Reid, but Steels were given hope 10 minutes from time when Joynes scored his first goal in over a month from the spot after Jacob Lever had been hauled down.

They almost snatched a point in the last minute, but Ryan Laights hit the bar.

Frickley Athletic produced a stirring second half fightback against Ramsbottom Town at Westfield Lane, coming from 2-0 down at the break to win 4-2.

But Matlock Town’s struggles continued with a 1-0 home defeat against Whitby Town, Dale Hopson’s close range strike just past the half hour mark the difference between the teams.

In the FA Cup, Sheffield FC and Warrington Town must try again tomorrow night at the home of football for the right to take their place in the third qualifying round following a goalless stalemate at Cantilever Park.

Goals either side of the interval from Jamie Green and Greg Young saw Buxton comfortably through 2-0 against Newcastle Benfield.
