The Spireites expected to announce a second signing in as many days at the end of last week but the deal stalled.

It is now known why as the un-named player “failed to respond by the deadline set”, read a Chesterfield statement.

A disappointed Carson said: “We made a good offer to the player in question and we thought a deal had been agreed towards the end of last week.

“Arrangements were made for him to come in on Friday to finalise the move, but the meeting was called-off a few hours before it was scheduled to take place.

“The player was advised that he would have until close of business today (Tuesday) to accept the terms he was offered. After failing to receive a response by the deadline, we have now officially withdrawn the offer.”

And added: “We are looking for players who show a passionate desire to play for Chesterfield.

“This player clearly did not demonstrate that so we had to take the decision to end our interest in him. We have already made a number of good signings and we will continue to look for players who will strengthen the squad.”
