It was thought at the time to be the goal that broke Herbert Munday’s 71-year-old goalscoring record for The Spireites.

Ernie had made good progress towards Herbert’s total of league 112 goals for the club, equalling it (so everyone thought) with the winner at Gillingham on 26th February 1980.

Eleven goalless games passed for Ernie after that, and fans thought that the prospect of breaking the record was perhaps weighing heavily on him - a belief that Ernie was keen to squash.

The goal eventually came, but later research indicated that Ernie’s first league goal - scored in a 2-1 defeat at home to Brentford in March 1968 - had been missed off the list, so the Gillingham goal actually broke the record - or so everyone thought.

Further research established Munday’s Football League goal total to be 107, rather than the 111 that stood in the record books at the time.

So it was Ernie’s goal at home to Millwall on 8th December that actually broke Munday’s record.
