Spireites players were advised to make a hasty exit after Wycombe game but teenage keeper was on a mission

Teenage goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale didn't join the vast majority of the Spireites in a quick exit from the Proact pitch on Saturday because he was on a mission.

The 19-year-old and his team-mates were briefed before the Wycombe game that a pitch invasion was possible at the full-time whistle, from either end of the ground

Players were advised to make their way rapidly down the tunnel, but Ramsdale turned back to his goalmouth and was soon engulfed in the promotion celebrations of visiting fans and players.

Only he and defender Sid Nelson lapped the stadium, applauding the home supporters.

For Ramsdale, it was a case of keeping a member of the backroom staff happy.

“It was addressed before the game, we did get told if the fans ran onto the pitch to try and get off as quickly as possible for safety reasons,” he said.

“Personally, our kit man likes his towels, mine was behind the goal.

“All through the second half you get banter with the fans and that’s a part of the game I quite enjoy.

“When they ran on I got quite a lot of ‘well dones’ and congratulations for the way I played.

“They were more bothered about going up than doing anything to me.”

Although a group of around 30 Town supporters invaded the pitch from the Kop end, they were soon cleared from the playing area by police and stewards.

And that allowed Ramsdale to walk around the ground and express his gratitude to supporters for the backing he’s had since his arrival on loan from Bournemouth in January.

“I had two security guards round me and by that point everyone was off the pitch so I thought I should appreciate the fans for what they’ve done since I’ve been here,” he said.

“I understand why everyone else ran off, especially when Chesterfield fans ran onto the pitch, I totally agree with why they ran off.

“But by the time I got my towel, it had settled down and the Wycombe fans were just celebrating with the Wycombe players.”
