The Spireites number one went under the knife in the summer to correct an injury he played through towards the end of last season.

Although the club have been delighted with his recent progress and Lee has been increasing his work on the training field with goalkeeper coach Matt Duke, a meeting with the surgeon last week revealed he requires an injection.

But boss Danny Wilson insists it’s not a serious setback for the 30-year-old.

“Tommy is going into have an injection in his shoulder,” he said.

“He’ll be okay, back training, it’s not serious.

“I’m not sure it’s set him back any.”

It was originally hoped that Lee would return to full training in the coming weeks, with the club’s head of sports science and medicine Roger Wylde saying the stopper was in ‘late stage rehab.’

He explained that the player’s shoulder needed a lot of work when he went in for the operation.

“It was quite a big operation which he had,” he said.

“Just to give a perspective on it, that operation would usually need four anchors in the re-attachment, Tommy’s needed eight

“That’s how much it was damaged.”

The initial prognosis was between 16 and 24 weeks for rehabilitation and it’s now 17 weeks since Lee had the operation.

News of a second procedure, albeit non invasive, would suggest Lee might not be ready for an imminent return.

Meanwhile Town right-back Paul McGinn has re-injured his hamstring.

The defender returned from a hamstring tear as a substitute last week against Fleetwood, but had a setback.

Wilson said: “He’s tweaked his hamstring again so that will be another couple of weeks.”

The manager has also indicated that Ian Evatt will be called upon this Saturday with Tom Anderson missing out through suspension.
