The stopper could miss the start of the season and Danny Wilson, who was already looking for a number two following Aaron Chapman’s departure, may have to find cover for Lee.

The Spireites boss said: “Tommy is in a position where he may not start the season so we may need two goalkeepers to come in.”

Wilson is also in the market for centre-half and hasn’t finished bringing players in.

Diego De Girolamo has been invited to train with the club next week, and others may follow.

And the manager hinted that there may also be departures.

Wilson said: “We’ve got some irons in the fire and we’re still hoping to bring at least another two or three in, maybe more.

“We’re still looking for a left-sided centre-back.

“We need to have that natural left-sider in the club - that’s going to be important to us. We’ll have to wait and see. Maybe one or two may have to leave as well, but we’ll address that when we can.

“In the meantime, it’s assembling a team that can push because it’s a very strong league. It was strong last year, but it’s even stronger this year, with the likes of Oxford coming up and the teams that were relegated, Bolton, Charlton in particular and MK Dons, who are very strong.

“They’ve added that extra bit of quality into the league and they’re spending money and spending it hard as well, so it’ll be a very tough season for us.”
